My Nissan Cube Experience

or, "My Week in a Weird Looking Little Car"
Last week my aging Jeep Grand Cherokee finally breathed its last. It had served me well over the course of eight years, and had almost 135,000 miles on it at its time of death (a moment of silence, please...). Of course, there's never a good time for your vehicle to give up on you, but the timing here was particularly bad -- a new work week was dawning with little to no time to go car hunting, plus my kids were about to start school again, so my wife needed to have her vehicle during the day. In order to buy some extra time till a more permanent solution could be found, it was necessary for me to rent a car for a week just so I'd have something to get back and forth to work. I explained my situation to the nice folks at Enterprise Car Rental and emphasized that I didn't need anything big and fancy, just something that I could use for a week's worth of commuting. Out of the cars they had available on the lot, they suggested the 2011 Nissan Cube. Not being much of a "car guy," I had never even heard of the Cube, and I have to admit that at first I stifled a chuckle when the rental agent took me out into the lot to show it to me. At first glance, the Nissan Cube looks like the kind of car a sorority girl would use to take her friends to the beach or to a Lady Gaga concert. Unfortunately, I'm not a sorority girl, I'm a 41 year old father of two. "Good Lord, I'm gonna look ridiculous driving this thing," I thought. However, my kids thought the Cube was cool, and it was the least expensive option on the rental lot, so I told them I'd take it as long as I could fit into the driver's seat (I'm 6-foot-6). When I climbed into the Cube, I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to fit inside with reasonable comfort so I told the Enterprise man "I'll take it," and thus began my Week with The Cube. Keeping in mind that I am not an automotive expert or a "gearhead," I'm going to try and give you a somewhat thorough overview of my experience driving this vehicle.
The Look...
The good news: if you're the type of person who chooses a vehicle based on how quirky or unusual it is, then your ship has definitely come in. The Cube is certainly the oddest looking car I've ever driven. I've read some reviews of the Cube online where its paradoxically boxy-yet-rounded shape has been described as "a refrigerator on wheels" or "a car that looks like it's made out of Play-Doh," both of which seem to sum it up pretty well. The Cube is so goofy looking that it borders on cute, as if it drove straight out of a Japanese comic strip. If the Pixar Studios crew had put an animated Cube character in their "Cars" films, they probably could've sold a million plush-toy versions of it to little girls. One thing I immediately learned is that driving a Cube will get you noticed. Cubes are obviously not very common in my area, because I was aware of people giving it, and me, strange looks every time I stopped at a red light or parked it in a lot. I hoped that they were wondering, "What the heck kind of car is that?" but more than likely it was something along the lines of, "Why is that big burly dude driving that girlie little car?" I soon began playing lethal doses of Slayer and Black Sabbath on its stereo every time I drove in an attempt to counter-act its un-coolness. I'm not sure if my efforts were successful or not.
The Interior...
The interior of the Nissan Cube is surprisingly roomy. I was able to fit my 6-foot-6 frame into the driver's seat with no problems, and my two sons (ages 4 and 9) settled into the back seat with plenty of room to spare. You should be able to comfortably carry up to five full grown adults in the Cube. The rear storage compartment is spacious enough to stack several suitcases or medium size boxes, making this an ideal vehicle for a dorm bound college student's Back-To-School travel.
One feature that I have yet to figure out is the completely out of place, seemingly random circle of greyish shag carpeting (?) that is attached to the center of the dashboard by a strip of Velcro. Why is it there? What purpose could it possibly serve? At first I thought it might be intended as a pad to keep your cell phone, iPod or other device in place while you're driving, but after I rounded a turn and my phone went skidding across the dash while testing that theory, I wasn't quite so sure anymore. I have scanned several message boards devoted to The Cube trying to figure out what this "rug" is for, and though I didn't find any definitive answers, I learned that many Cube owners love the Rug and have come up with a variety of nicknames for it. My favorite was "Cubic Hair."
Another odd feature of the interior (which I didn't even notice till one of my kids pointed it out to me) is the interior ceiling, which sports a "ripple" pattern surrounding the interior light in the center. It looks as if someone dropped a pebble into a pond, and I suppose it's intended to give the driver a Zen-like sense of inner peace while they're driving. Between that and the shag rug circle, I was beginning to feel like I was driving a mobile version of Austin Powers' swingin' pad.
If you're a thirsty sort of traveler, the Cube has you covered. There are an unusually large amount of drink/cup holders in the Cube -- two are set right next to each other on the driver's side dashboard (a large one for coffee cups and Big Gulp sized drinks, plus a smaller one that would fit a water bottle), three in the center console, and two more for the rear seat passengers. If you were to keep a drink in every beverage holder in this vehicle, you'd never get to your destination because you'd be stopping to pee every five miles.
The Driving Experience...
Despite its outer goofiness, the Nissan Cube turned out to be a fun vehicle to drive. Its small size is ideal for getting in and out of tight parking spaces, and its on-the-road performance was satisfactory. Even though it's been a while since I drove a vehicle that only had front-wheel drive (as opposed to the 4x4 Jeep that I was used to), It could probably use a little more "pep" for going up steep hills, but it handled fine on the highway. The Cube is much lower to the ground than my previous vehicle, however, which made me more conscious of dips and potholes in the road and also made me wonder how well this car would handle in the snow. Fortunately it's only early September as I write this so it's unlikely that I'll be finding out first hand. (I did drive it in heavy rain, however, and had no problems other than the sound of the raindrops drumming on the roof drowning out the stereo.) If I had to take a wild guess, I'd imagine that the Cube might have trouble navigating through any snow deeper than a few inches. That's something prospective buyers might keep in mind if they live in the often-frosty Northeast like I do.
Overall...
Driving the Nissan Cube for a week has been an interesting experience. It may not be the sort of vehicle that I would've bought for myself (its style is a bit too "new wave" for a traditionally-minded, non-funky old goat like me) but the chance to "borrow" one was a unique opportunity. Considering that my initial response to the Cube was laughter, I have to admit that It handles reasonably well on the road and has an impressive amount of amenities (i.e. a decent stereo, lots of drink holders, power outlets, hookups for your iPod and Bluetooth, etc.) especially since I understand it's a relatively affordable vehicle. Young people looking for their first reasonably priced "new" car or anyone looking for a ride that's slightly out of the ordinary might want to give the Nissan Cube a look. Happy motoring!

Nice post!!!! BTW - all the ads I see are for the Nissan Cube - lol!!!!
Try seeing if that dashboard carpet mat will hold a hot cup of coffee.
Hey FatFreddy, the mysterious shag circle kinda looks like pot instead of "Cubic Hair" HaHa! Interesting and funny experience with your 'Cube' adventure my friend.
I've always wondered what the inside of Nissan Cubes looked like... the ceiling is trippy! This was an interesting read. Thanks for sharing your experience!
I got my Cube a few months ago and LOVE it to death (though the Unique car is me, it's replacing a car that was COVERED in bumper stickers. the shag is useless for anything other than getting to say the words "cubic hair"! I have the '09 model and I am so happy I got it. slide the back seat forward and the moderate "trunk"space will suddenly hold 6 of the plastic tubs I get at walmart.
My favorite use of the cube is for Yard Sales though. I go bargon hunting every week and and am shocked at how much I fit in it. plus I can get it in and out of spots that the biggers cars have no hope of (I can pull right in where someone else would have to parallel park). It's my dream car and I love it

Hey I like it. Thanks for the great review.
What an interesting review! I'm a girl who is not a big fan of cars, but this hub caught my attention. Cube looks cute. I've never seen one in my country though. Voted up!:)
Interesting and funny Hub. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee that is over 165000 miles and it is still going strong. I hope it never dies. The Cube would be to low for me, I have a bad back which makes it hard for me to get in and out of shorter cars.

Buy American. My Dodge Caravans always get better than 150,000 trouble free miles. One of them went over 300,000 and was passed down through the whole family and finally on to a non family member. If you have to 'get out of Dodge', get a Ford. PS that Cube looks just too silly.
Simply Great Hub! Congrats to selected your hub as hub of the Day. and thanks to share Nissan Cube Experience.
I always wondered how the Cube drives and looks inside. I've said I could see myself drive one but I've never drove one or read any reviews on it because I'm not needing a new car yet. (Hope my Matrix holds out a bit longer. It's got 170,000 miles on it, but I really like it. ;) ) Truly an informative hub!
I've never seen a vehicle quite like that before, it looks really fun! Oh and big congratulations on being 'Hub of the day'!!! =)
omg, my first reaction was: this car is totally cute! Definitely girly! I'm a jeep girl so I don't know if I'd ever get one though! Loved reading about your experience!
great hub , , ,I like this car, I think it is cool and dependable based on Nissan's reputation. If it were available back in '07 I would have opted for it instead of my Honda 'Fit,' yet I am very happy with it.
This Hub really made my morning...thank you! I found it quite funny, especially the "cubic hair". I have always found that this car reminds me of a toaster. I am just waiting for any day that the owner is just going to pop out of the top. LOL. Congrats on Hub of the Day! Voted up.
Reminds me of a modern version of the Flintstones car! Good hub, congrats.
Congratulations on being named Hub of the Day! Your Cube Hub was so funny and interesting that I surprised myself by actually reading a hub about a car all the way to the end -- and enjoying it! Thanks for a fun read! Voted up, useful, funny and interesting!
Hey. That was a really nice piece of article. You should be writing more reviews - on anything & everything,,
We have one of these! We've had it for a year and absolutely love it. We got a tremendous deal on it, buying it during a Labor Day sale, and have not regretted it once. My partner is 6' 5" and also fits without a problem. And as for the "Cubic Hair" - perfect for holding sunglasses in place, or our Fastpass (transponder for paying bridge tolls electronically).
This hub compelled me out of curiosity and I enjoyed reading it immensely. It is no surprise then why the Hub team awarded it: Grats on a HOTD.
What a funny, delightful review of a car. I have seen them on the road and I have wondered about them and what they are all about. I love the round shag carpet thingy. Who knows what it is for. Aren't you glad you got to experience one. Congratulations on being Hub of the Day!
I thought it was an old car at first. Very interesting but now I'll go crazy trying to find out what the rug is really for.
No offense, but the Cube is the ugliest vehicle I have even seen...topping the Kia Soul and the earlier box from Scion. Sorry, just don't like shoe boxes with wheels and no aerodymanics...like pushing a barn door into the wind. To each their own...I prefer my Hyundai Genesis. Sleek, refined, and VERY comfortable. Enjoy your box. LOL
My aunt owns this car and I never really looked at it from the angle you're portraying. Very interesting, I might put this as my would be next car to buy. Good hub.
Congrats on getting hub of the day! I appreciate your honest feedback. I've always been a little skeptical of the boxy cars myself. I prefer the classic, boring shape of something like a Camry or Civic. We tend to laugh at my mother-in-law who thinks her PT Cruiser is really cool...It's good to know that this is a decent vehicle, though.
I will but I still can't find the answer. Did you ask them at the rental place?
According to a review I just read, the rug is something quirky to make it stand out. Even the Nissan ad said it had no use. Did you notice the windows are asymmetrical as well?
Here is the quote from the review:
"The dash-topping shag rug is one way drivers can personalize the Cube. But don't expect to get any use out of it."

I've seen this car before. Very unusual looking.
Congratulations on being the Hub of the day! I owned a Scion XB which is basically Toyota's version of a Cube. The XB and Cube are fun little cars to drive, with surprising room inside for being so small and "cute" looking on the outside. I'm glad you enjoyed your experience. Thanks for sharing.
That ripple around the lights is pretty trippy. and the shag, I'm liking the shag. Congrats on the hub of the day.
I live in Japan, I can say that the cube is a very popular car here, people are still driving the old models around. Japanese house wives like the side opening back door. Many women in Japan are too short to reach the normal raising back doors.
The only complaints in the low kilo/litre. And in Japan, summers are a killer with up to 40degrees and 100% humidity so you need the A/C on strong. This really puts a strain on the engine and can struggle up a hill with the A/C full (from zero momentum).
How every the Japanese see it as a good all around reliable car.
My post on cube forum describes my 7,000 mile trip in a cube around our country. I titled it "what a car" Im 6'4" and never had to adjust the seat. I must say I'm surprised by the amout of people and yourself so into "is it macho enough for me" "what will others think" etc. who cares, it's an amazing car with safety and engineering built in that isn't in any other car under 30k
I own a 2010 Nissan Cube. I got it in April as a anniversary present. I have to say the reason I even looked at the thing on the lot is because a friend of mine got it a few days before and i thought it was the most hilarious looking car ever. After a test drive i was sold on the little toaster. The only downside is the never ending rock chips from the way the window is shaped. it sits at the perfect angle for any thing that hits it to chip it.
My wife bought a cube. I was a bit concerned about her interest in it. I have a Nissan Titan LE and she had an Altima Hybrid. She traded in the Altima (I liked this car). However, I have to admit, while my truck is incredible, I do love to drive the cube on occasion. It is very easy. I love my truck. It is incredible in every way. But something happens when you get in the cube. It is carefree and easy going. Good on gas too. I drive it for a few days, and then decide that I need more power and a louder stereo. Hers does have the Rockford Fosgate stereo, which is nice, but mine has the Rockford Fosgate stereo too, but with higher wattage and more speakers. To sum up, I would never buy the Cube for myself, but I love driving it. It is definitely a great car for my wife. Many people would truly love it. I am a gear head and am particular about my cars. I still like it!
You should be happy with it. I have had 10+ Nissans with no major problems. I drive them very hard and they can take it. I have only had so many because I keep finding a new one I want! I trade up too often! ;)
I got a 2010 Cube back in March and just love my cute little car. I got mine because I have a Great Dane and she can stand on the backseat and not hit her head. We are always getting very strange looks from people when they see her get out of the backseat. Most of the time I have people ask can they look at it or ask me a bunch of questions.
I have not seen a commercial in my area just for the Cube, and I have not seen that many of them on the road in Eastern N.Carolina. For that matter we drove it to Oklahoma in July and we only saw two other Cubes,(one on the hwy and one in OK).
I don't use my shag rug, because my husband thinks it is useless and I do also, all though I have been thinking of using it just for the looks and questions that I know I will get.
Gotta say that I haven't even wanted to drive this out of curiosity! However, now I know about the random piece of carpet I may just change my mind!! Great Hub!
It's not often that you see a car review this entertaining, I see why you got HOTD with it. Maybe I'll try some of your horror movie / metal band reviews, even though I don't ordinarily go for those things much.
I enjoyed reading about your Cube experience! My husband is also 6'6" so finding a car roomy enough is always a challenge. What a surprise to find a roomy interior in a compact car. Your writing style makes for pleasant reading. No wonder this is a popular hub!

Is the shag centerpiece there to hold an iPod so it doesn't slide around while driving?
